What Are Those Holes?

Film perforations, or ‘sprocket holes’, are used by projectors to pull the film down one frame at a time for viewing in rapid succession. When scanning in HD please be aware that this format is widescreen and will show these holes as bright white spots on the left side of the image (or both for silent 16mm).

Those bright white spots in the upper and lower left corners are the perforations, and as you can see in this example, actually have recorded image between them.
